What Are BNG Units?

BNG units (also referred to as biodiversity net gain credits) are a quantified measure of biodiversity value calculated using the DEFRA Biodiversity Metric.

Where a development cannot achieve the required 10% biodiversity net gain on-site, developers may buy off-site BNG units from a registered habitat provider.
